If you’re travelling to New Zealand, no trip is complete without a visit to New Zealand’s premier resort town, Queenstown. Located in the south of the South Island on a stunning lake and surrounded by towering mountains and forest covered hills, Queenstown is considered the Adventure Capital of the World. With its endless thrills, from bungy jumping to white water rafting, its natural beauty and its vibrant nightlife, Queenstown will get your blood pumping like no other. This is a town that is alive and kicking.
Queenstown is located in the Central Otago region of New Zealand. The stunning scenery of this area can be seen in movies such as The Lord of the Rings and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. This is also an area known for some of New Zealand’s best weather. Its warm, sunny summers produce juicy stoned fruit and great New Zealand wines. Many wonderful lazy hours can be spent visiting the region’s top wineries and vineyards. Beautiful Lake Wakatipu is the place to be in summer, with people of all ages lying on its shores or picnicing on the lush green grass behind. There is a real buzz in the air; music plays, drink flows, food sizzles and ice-creams melt. For great views of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu take a boat ride on the TSS Earnslaw Vintage Steamship or pass through alpine forest on your way up the Skyline Gondola.
Queenstown’s cold, snowy winters make for New Zealand’s best skiing and snowboarding. Queenstown’s Coronet Peak and The Remarkables are world-class skifields. Nearby Wanaka also has great skiing on Cardrona and Treble Cone skifields. And skiing is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to adventure sports offered here. Bungy jumping was invented in Queenstown, and you can still jump from the original Kawarau Bridge site. Paragliding, jetboating, skydiving, hang gliding and quadbiking are just some of the exciting adventure sports you can experience in Queenstown.
The seasons may change, but the buzz of Queenstown is a constant. Always vibrant, Queenstown is widely known for its fantastic nightlife, sophisticated restaurants and fabulous shopping. On balmy summer nights people dine outside and bars spill out onto the streets. In winter, the après ski crowd stay warm and cosy beside a roaring fire. A gourmet pizza from Winnies is a must in any season. Central Queenstown shops range from outdoor sports stores to world-class art galleries to luxurious day spas.
Queenstown is also a great base from which to explore New Zealand’s Southern Lakes Region and the entire Central Otago area. In under 30 minutes you can be in Arrowtown, well known for its goldmining history and beautiful autumn leaves. Arrowtown is also very popular with golfers and is home to top New Zealand golf course, Millbrook. This region also has some of New Zealand’s finest walking tracks including the Routeburn Track and the world-famous Milford Track, located in Fiordland National Park. Surrounded by all this beauty, adrenaline and atmosphere, never will you feel more alive than when in Queenstown.
