Nelson

picture of Nelson

The sunny city of Nelson is an absolute must when travelling to New Zealand. Located in the top north-west corner of the South Island of New Zealand, Nelson gets the most sunshine in the entire country. With its relaxed attitude, this area is home to stunning golden beaches, three national parks, a thriving art scene and wonderful summer fruit. Located under a big blue sky and golden sun, Nelson is the destination where New Zealanders (or Kiwis as they’re affectionately known) go to holiday.

In central Nelson you’ll find a beautiful cathedral, historic homes, glorious botanic gardens and wonderful restaurants and bars. Nelson food is fresh and takes time. Seafood dishes are a specialty, with Nelson serving up some of New Zealand’s best seafood. As a result of its warm climate, Nelson is one of New Zealand’s largest fruit growing regions. Stop at one of the many roadside stalls for peaches, pick your own raspberries or taste great New Zealand wine at one of Nelson’s many vineyards. Nelson’s vibrant Saturday Market features local produce such as cheeses & handmade breads, clothing, flowers and fabulous art works. Nelson is renowned for having one of the best art scenes in New Zealand. Art galleries filled with paintings, glassblowing, ceramics and Maori carvings are found in the town centre and along the side of the road. The Suter Gallery has a great collection of New Zealand and international art. The World of Wearable Art and Classic Cars Museum is a must-see, displaying clothing from New Zealand’s Wearable Arts Awards and classic cars from the 20th & 21st Centuries.

Nelson has some of the best beaches in New Zealand. Dark sand beach Tahunanui, with its warm water, is only a few minutes drive from the centre of town and also has a small theme park. A little further out are the lovely Rabbit Island and Mapua (especially renowned for its lovely camping ground…oh and also for being an optional nudist beach). Beautiful golden beaches are a specialty of this area. At the very top of the South Island is glorious Golden Bay and the fabulous artistic town of Takaka. Just north of Nelson are stunning Kaiteriteri and Pohara beaches and the Abel Tasman National Park. The Abel Tasman National Park is pure paradise; golden sand, clear blue water and native New Zealand forest live together under one big hot sun. It’s a perfect combination of relaxation and adventure. Considered one of New Zealand’s great walks, the coastal track takes between 3-5 days to walk, or you can catch a water taxi and spend a lazy day lying on the beach. Many people also kayak or sail around the bays alongside dolphins, seals and penguins.

The second of the three national parks in this area is the Nelson Lakes National Park. In its mountains, lakes and native forest you can hike, climb, fish, boat or ski at Rainbow Ski Area. Rugged landscape, rare New Zealand birds and the Heaphy Track are found in the third national park, Kahurangi National Park.

Nelson is a spellbinding city. Many Kiwis have fond childhood memories of Nelson; picking juicy raspberries, strawberries and apricots, licking ice-creams in the midday sun, building sandcastles on a tiny golden beach. Nelson is a place you will make life-long memories to treasure at any age.
