About Dunedin
Dunedin is widely known as the "Edinburgh of the South", taking the name from the Gaelic version of its Scottish equal, it also shares street and suburb names. Dunedin was founded by Scottish settlers. In the beginning, when the settlers first arrived it became the commercial centre for the gold-rush towns of nearby Central Otago, leaving a lasting legacy of architecture formed from volcanic bluestone and limestone, including significant villas that sprawl the hills around the town. The population is around 120,000 of which spreads beyond the hills and beaches. Dunedin's compact city centre is graced with flower-filled gardens and is delightful throughout the year.
Nearly 30,000 students from the University of Otago contribute to a strong arts scene, as well as a lively nightlife
